The thirty-kilometre strait between Lanzarote and Fuerteventura is one of the busiest ferry corridors in the Canary archipelago, carrying over half a million passengers annually across a channel first crossed by Berber traders in the twelfth century.
Modern high-speed catamarans cover the Playa Blanca–Corralejo route in thirty-five minutes, a passage that once took Guanche canoes an entire day under sail. The strait — locally known as La Bocaina — runs deep, often exceeding two hundred metres, and funnels Atlantic currents that create one of Europe's most reliable dolphin-watching corridors. Pods of bottlenose and common dolphins feed in the upwelling zones, visible year-round from the ferry decks.
Boat trips from Puerto del Carmen to Fuerteventura begin with a twenty-minute bus transfer south to Playa Blanca, the embarkation point for all Lanzarote–Fuerteventura crossings. The port occupies a sheltered bay beneath the Montaña Roja volcanic cone, its breakwaters lined with salt-crusted basalt walls that date to the eighteenth-century salinas. Ferry operators run departures every ninety minutes from six in the morning until evening, with open-deck vessels and enclosed salons accommodating foot passengers, cyclists, and vehicles. The crossing itself offers unobstructed views of Lobos Islet — a protected nature reserve midway between the islands — and the dune systems of Corralejo National Park, which stretch eleven kilometres along Fuerteventura's northern coast.
Beyond the standard transfer ferries, catamaran day trips package the crossing with dolphin-watching circuits and onboard meals, looping through the strait's productive waters before landing at Corralejo. These excursions typically allocate three hours ashore, enough time to walk the harbour promenade or reach the Grandes Playas dune belt. Return crossings depart late afternoon, aligning with the westward light that illuminates Lanzarote's volcanic skyline. The strait's transparency — often exceeding twenty metres visibility — makes the passage a popular route for underwater photographers and snorkellers, though swimming is prohibited from ferry decks.
